Curated and Supported by An Asylum
Blood, the primal connection that defines all living beings. In a society of convenience, it is easy to forget to question the animal resources that we consume as bodies of habit, because we are now disconnected from the ways of slaughter. How do we, as individuals, perceive the value of organic material?
"血, Blood" is a discursive art project that originated from the artist's graduation project. The artist's initial aim was to examine how people perceive the relationship between animal materials and human materials. The project reflects on how people tend to consume meat without considering the process of slaughter.
⠀
The project has evolved to explore the value that humans place on organic material derived from humans. It raises questions about how individuals determine the worth of others based on such materials and what factors influence this determination.
⠀
The exhibition showcases a collection of objects modeled after the Four Treasures of the Study, each representing an individual's worth using human materials.
In order to create the Four Treasures of the Study, the artist behind the project put out an open call on Instagram, inviting volunteers to donate a variety of human materials. Blood samples were used to make the ink block, hair was used for the brush, and sentimental paper material was recycled to create new paper.
As part of the research process, the volunteers were interviewed. Through a series of questions, the artist aimed to gain insights into how each individual perceives value based on the organic materials they contributed to the project.
⠀
The documentation of these interviews was presented as a video installation during the exhibition.
